Creating an online memorial: how to start (for free)

By Johan

Step by step, create a lasting online memorial for a loved one, tied to the real place on the map. Free to start, private or public.

A grave that lies far away. Ashes scattered in a spot almost no one can still find. A bench where someone loved to sit. Such places hold a memory, but they are fragile: they get overgrown, forgotten or lost. An online memorial makes that memory lasting, and ties it to the real place on the map.

What is an online memorial?

An online memorial is a page of its own for someone you want to remember: a person, but just as easily a pet, a special place or a moment. You add a name, a story, photos and optionally a video. On TributeMap that page is tied to a real location, so the memory gets a place on the map that you can always find again and share.

Creating a memorial in three steps

1. Choose the place on the map

You start with the location: the cemetery, the spot where ashes were scattered, or a place that meant a lot. You choose the precision yourself, from an exact spot to just the surrounding area if you would rather not share the location down to the metre.

2. Write the memory and add images

A name, a few dates, a story. Add photos, and with the larger plans a video too. You do not have to finish it all at once; you can always add more later.

3. Share it, or keep it to yourself

You decide whether the memorial is public or private. Public means family and friends can find it and share memories together. Private keeps it just for you and those you invite.

What does it cost?

You can start for free. A free memorial has room for a story and a photo. If you want more photos, a longer video or lifetime storage, there are paid plans from a one-time amount, with no subscription. So you keep it as simple or as extensive as you like.

Privacy and care

Remembering is tender work. Every memorial is moderated with care, and you stay in control of what is public and what is not. You never share more than you choose to.

Getting started

A memory deserves a place that does not disappear. Create a memorial now, or browse the map first to see how others did it. If you also want to connect your family, read how to make your family tree on the map visible.

TributeMap is a quiet place to remember loved ones at the spot that mattered to them.
