Terms of use

How we treat each other here

Last updated: 27 April 2026

Welcome to TributeMap. We've kept these terms as clear as possible. If you have questions, email us at info@tributemap.com.

What TributeMap is

TributeMap is a platform where visitors can place tributes to people, places, pets and events, tied to a location on the map. Others can visit these tributes and, after moderation, leave memories.

Who's responsible

TributeMap is maintained by Johan and family. Since 12 May 2026, TributeMap is a sole proprietorship (Dutch: eenmanszaak), registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under number 42057633, based in Odoorn, the Netherlands. The VAT identification number is NL005462889B74. Contact via info@tributemap.com.

Use of the site

By using TributeMap you agree to these terms. You may use the site to share tributes and memories that align with the tone and purpose of the platform.

What you may not do:

  • Place tributes about people without their permission
  • Share content that's hateful, hurtful, defamatory or threatening
  • Use someone else's photos without permission
  • Post spam, ads or commercial messages
  • Spread incorrect or misleading information
  • Disrupt the site or other visitors technically

Content you place

  • You retain ownership. What you share remains yours. We claim no ownership.
  • You grant us a license to display, store and copy the content for moderation and backup purposes.
  • You vouch for what you place. You confirm that you have the right to share the content and that it doesn't infringe third-party rights.
  • We moderate. Every tribute and memory is read before publication. We may refuse, edit (in consultation with the owner) or remove content that violates these terms.

Moderation of memories

Memories on a tribute pass first by the tribute's owner, via a mailed link. If a visitor reports something, a moderator may edit or remove it. The owner is notified with the change included.

Video uploads

Premium tributes can include a short video (basic 60 seconds, with paid upgrades up to 10 minutes). For video, in addition to the general terms, the following points apply:

  • Publicly visible. The video is publicly visible on the tribute page, accessible to anyone with the link or via public search results. There is no private or members-only version. Do not upload material you don't want to share publicly.
  • Copyright and image rights. You declare that you are entitled to share the video: that you are the creator yourself or have permission from the copyright holder, and that all recognisable persons in the footage have given consent for publication. For minors, parental/guardian consent applies.
  • Prohibited content. No sexual or suggestive material, violence, hate speech, illegal acts, or material that violates Dutch law. A moderator may hide or remove a video without prior warning when these rules are not followed.
  • No refund on violation. When a video is removed because the content violates these terms, the upgrade fee paid is not refunded.
  • Retention. The video falls under the same retention guarantee as the Premium tribute itself (see below: 5 years). After that, an extension is asked for. When a tribute drops back to the free version the video is no longer publicly displayed (and the file may be deleted after a reasonable period).
  • No claim on availability or quality. We make reasonable efforts to keep the video stably available and to maintain playback quality at the level you uploaded it, but give no guarantee on 100% uptime, on all devices/browsers, or on playback speed over slow connections. In case of outages or data loss, no compensation is owed except to the extent mandatory law requires us to.
  • Removal on request. You can remove the video at any time via your account. A request for permanent removal by third parties (for example a person in the footage who later objects) will be handled seriously by our moderators within a reasonable timeframe.

Locked legacy tributes

An owner can lock their legacy tribute against changes after activation. We respect that lock as platform administrators too: after activation we will not modify the content ourselves, not even at the request of relatives, co-owners or third parties. The tribute stays as the owner left it.

Two exceptions where we will intervene, even in a locked tribute:

  • When there is a court order requiring us to change or remove the content.
  • When the content is demonstrably harmful to relatives or third parties (such as defamation, doxing, discriminatory or threatening statements).

Outside these exceptions, we keep our hands off. We promise this because the spirit of a legacy tribute is that the owner decides how they will be remembered.

Responsible legacy tributes

A legacy tribute (prepared in advance for oneself) is meant for people who want to prepare calmly for age, illness, or a pre-arranged end-of-life choice with medical support. We want to prevent the feature from being used by someone in a suicidal crisis without professional support.

Therefore we reserve the following rights:

  • If we have reasonable concern that a tribute was prepared in the context of an unsupervised plan to end one's life, we may set the tribute to private or remove it without prior consultation.
  • We may contact help organisations (such as 113 Suicide Prevention in the Netherlands) and share relevant information insofar as necessary in the person's interest, consistent with our privacy diligence.
  • This policy does not apply to people in a legitimate care pathway (palliative care, hospice, medically supported euthanasia). Questions about that are welcome by email.

We do this out of care, not punishment. Anyone seeking support can reach 113 Suicide Prevention 24/7 anonymously at 0800-0113 or 113.nl, or find a local crisis line at findahelpline.com.

Co-ownership and transfer

An owner may invite others to become co-owners of a tribute, and optionally designate a succession order for later transfer. Co-owners can edit text, photos and memories, but cannot delete the tribute, change privacy settings, or promote themselves to primary owner.

Transfer of primary ownership can start in three ways:

  • Manually by the ownervia their account, or by a TributeMap admin performing the transfer on the owner's request.
  • By a trusted contact via a mail link after passing, as part of the legacy flow. The activation flow remains as described under Responsible legacy tributes.
  • Automatically on extended inactivity, only if the owner has explicitly enabled this opt-in (configurable to 6, 12, 18 or 24 months without activity). The owner first receives a warning email and then has 14 more days to log in or make an edit to cancel the transfer. Only after that does the invitation email go to the first successor.

If an invited successor doesn't respond within 12 weeks to the invitation email, the offer automatically rolls over to the next in line. A successor who accepts becomes the new primary owner; the previous primary remains attached as co-owner so access is preserved.

TributeMap reserves the right to administratively reverse an ongoing or recently completed transfer when there is reasonable suspicion of fraud, coercion or abuse, or when the original owner reports a misunderstanding within a reasonable timeframe. The six-year archive on full platform inactivity (see privacy page) is independent of this opt-in successor trigger.

Privacy

How we handle your data is described on our privacy page. We work without ads or third-party trackers.

Contributions and payments

Basic use of TributeMap is and stays free. Creating a tribute, leaving memories, and browsing the map costs nothing.

For those who want more room there are three paid packages. None is a subscription: there is no auto-renewal, and you never pay again without consciously agreeing.

  • Premium (€29 for 5years retention): up to four photos with captions, self-editing, your own URL and QR code, memorial book PDF, video up to 90 seconds. After five years we kindly ask if you'd like to extend for €15 (half the Premium price at that time) for another five years. If you don't, your tribute stays online, but the extra features revert to the free version after 30 days. Nothing is automatically deleted; files stay on storage so reactivation brings everything back.
  • Memoriam (€99 for 50 years retention): up to eight photos, video up to 5 minutes included, plus everything from Premium and priority moderation and support. After 50 years the same renewal flow applies as with Premium, for €50 (half the Memoriam price at that time) for another fifty years.
  • Permanent (€249, lifetime): up to fifteen photos, video up to 10 minutes included, and no renewal emails ever. "Lifetime" means: as long as TributeMap exists and is operational. If we discontinue the service, you receive an email with a data export, no refund.

Voluntary contributions via our payment partner are welcome to support maintenance. These are not donations in the legal sense (we are not a registered charity), but tips. No service or tax benefit is exchanged.

Payments are processed via PayPal. We only receive the payout amount, no card details.

Restoration after removal

Sometimes a tribute is removed by us following a takedown request or due to a mistake on our side. If it later turns out the removal was unjustified (for example, family or the original owner reaches out and demonstrates this), we can manually restore the tribute from our backups.

For this manual restoration we charge a one-time fee of €25. This fee covers the administrative time involved in retrieving, verifying and republishing the tribute. If the removal was demonstrably our fault, the fee is waived.

This is different from retrieving a tribute from the paid archive (see our privacy page). For the paid archive, re-activating paid is the only path out. There is no separate restoration fee.

Liability

TributeMap is provided as-is. We do our best to keep the site safe and reliable, but:

  • We're not liable for unavailability, data errors or loss of content, though we work hard to prevent these via backups and careful practice
  • We're not liable for what visitors post or for consequences of sharing it
  • We're not liable for actions of external payment processors we work with

Where liability does arise, it's limited to the amount you've paid through the site in the last year (for free users: zero).

Termination

You can have your tribute removed at any time by emailing info@tributemap.com. We may refuse or revoke access in case of serious breach of these terms.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the most recent change. For major changes affecting your tribute, we'll send an email.

Applicable law

These terms are governed by Dutch law. Disputes will be brought before the competent court in the Netherlands.
